The Birth of DICT

The Philippines is all set to not only become a more competitive nation, but also to be a leader in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry and other related sectors like business and tourism with the birth of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which will probably be one of the farewell parting gifts of the six-year tenure of outgoing Philippine president Benigno S. Aquino III.

Under Republic Act No. 10844 which was signed by President Aquino a few days ago recently which was a surprise to many of us tech junkies, the Department of Information and Communications Technology aims to implement policies and regulations that can promote and support the ICT industry, educate Filipino citizens about the industry and its role in nation building, and protect the welfare and rights of consumers and businesses alike regarding the industry among others. Over-all, the birth of this new department will not only provide quality and affordable ICT services that would benefit every Filipino but also improve systems, resources and infrastructure as well.

For me, it is a welcome development for the Filipino nation as many of us are longing for a body that would provide solutions for many problems encountered regarding the ICT industry, which include the improvement of internet services in the country considering that it has one of the slowest average internet speeds in the world today due to many significant factors. The creation of the new department will also create new jobs for the industry, especially those in BPO and game development.

Well, it is all up to the new administration and the new DICT to make our country more competitive than usual in today's modern world. Let's just hope for the best that we can do.
