Happy independence day, Filipinos!! God bless our country!! God bless FREEDOM!! |
If I remember correctly, it was June 12, 1898 when the Philippines first celebrated its independence from the Spanish regime under the helm of the country's first President, General Emilio Aguinaldo, in front of thousands of people in Kawit, Cavite. The day marked the beginning of the country's steadfast road to freedom and democracy that culminated with the EDSA People Power Revolution that has united the Filipino people to oust the Marcos regime from power and inspired other countries who want to rid of the tyranny plaguing within their nation.
Every celebration of Philippine Independence Day every June 12 is worthy of being remembered and celebrated and not to be enjoyed by those who want to scar the respectful celebration with something that Filipinos do not like and want to see like violence, parties or anything that can offend their fellow loved ones. But, it is a good thing that many Filipino companies have their own way of making Philippine Independence Day worth celebrating for every Juan who want to become part of the celebration even in his or her own little way.
For instance, Filipinos can understand the true spirit of the celebration by watching either Heneral Luna tonight at 9:15 pm, Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo tomorrow right after Banana Sundae, or both on ABS-CBN, ABS-CBN HD for Sky and Destiny Cable subscribers, and on iWantv. They can also show their support for Filipino products just by ordering an Adobo Flakes Yum Burger at Jollibee for only Php59 before it ends or buying bits of Filipino stuff at your favorite SM Supermall during its three-day independence weekend sale until tomorrow. Heck, there are many things that you can do during the celebration of Philippine Independence.
But, the most important thing about this celebration is the fact that you should be proud of being a Filipino, whoever you are and whatever you are doing in your life. You will forget how it all began someday, but you should never forget the sacrifices of our forefathers to make the Philippines what it is today. Remember everything you can learn from history and you will be blessed with the freedom to do the things that you want to do in your life before it ends.
