The State of Competitive Gaming in the Philippines

2016 is indeed a big year for the Philippines when it comes to competitive gaming, more particularly the electronic sports industry. At one time, many Filipinos are just playing their favorite online games in computer shops for fun and sportsmanship. But some of them have dreamed of competing against some of the best online players from different parts of the world regardless of the game they want to play with. But now, our country is now making the right mentality and potential to become a force in the global e-sports world.

The Philippines has just hosted two big international events that has catered thousands of gaming enthusiasts and spectators and a global viewing audience, especially those watching on television via TV5 and Aksyon TV. Despite the local e-sports team Mineski's early departure from these said competitions, the ESL One Manila and Manila Majors 2016 prove to be successful as many Filipino gamers, young and old alike, watch how the best professional online gamers in the world compete against each other in a grand stage like these two. In fact, they can become an inspiration for other aspiring local professional gamers if they want to do the same way they can.

Following the successful staging of two global e-sports competitions in our local shores, it seems that Filipinos are set to become inspired with this recent development regarding an upcoming grand international e-sports event next month. Two Filipino pro gaming teams are set to compete in The International DOTA 2 Championships in Seattle, Washington, namely The TNC and Execration. TNC became a regional qualifier after beating Malaysian powerhouse Fnatic and fellow Filipino gaming team Execration which by the way qualified as a wildcard in the Southeast Asian competitive region.

The best thing about the ongoing progress of competitive gaming in the Philippines is that these recent developments are being backed by the national government led by no less than Senator Bam Aquino. According to the former chairman of the National Youth Commission, this is just the beginning of the Philippines' road to becoming a major player in the e-sports and game development scenes and the participation of two Filipino teams in a global e-sports event is simply a welcome development for the two growing industries.

It seems that the typical Filipino gamer's dream will become a reality in due time as the Philippine gaming industry (not talking about the casinos) continue to reap efforts in making our country a potential market for e-sports and the video game industry. Heck, some of the biggest names in the video game world have already made their presence in our local shores like SNK Playmore and Ubisoft as well and several universities have added game development as one of its courses for incoming college students. Yes, the video game industry in the Philippines has grown and evolved quite smoothly, but this will be because of young Filipinos' aspiration to make playing games on their computers a legitimate one in our country for many years to come. Just remember to follow the rules and go back home before curfew time, OK?
