Will Gigasurf and GoSurf Be of Help?

Smart Communications Inc. and Globe Telecom have recently strengthened their mobile internet offerings by offering larger data allocation on some of their promos for their subscribers through Globe's newly-enhanced GoSurf 50 and Smart's Gigasurf 50, both of them are valid for 3 days.

New Globe GoSurf 50

Globe was the first to offer this increased data allocation promo for its mobile and broadband subscribers but its promo is indeed the only one with an additional feature once subscribed to the promo - unlimited texts to all networks. Globe's new GoSurf 50 will have a mobile data allocation of 700 MB on a regular 3-day offer which is double the original normal allocation. The new variant will also include 300 MB access to any of the following services: Youtube, Dailymotion, Facebook, Viber, Snapchat, Spotify Basic, Clash of Clans and Clash Royale. Overall, this will give Globe subscribers 1 GB of allocated mobile data for open access and specific service connection needs.

Smart Gigasurf 50

On the other hand, Smart's Gigasurf 50 offers a 1 GB mobile data allocation for open access which is much larger than Globe's 700 MB on its new GoSurf 50 variant with 300 MB allocation for use with iflix, Spinnr, Youtube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Dubsmash and Skype Qik. This offer is available for Smart and Smart Bro prepaid and postpaid subscribers.

Although these promos are interestingly engaging, I don't know if they can be of help when it comes to improving the quality of internet services in the Philippines. Based on the latest data released by Akamai, the Philippines remains one of the slowest average internet speeds in Asia Pacific as of now with a reported average speed of 3.5 Mbps for the first quarter of 2016. This is not good news for many Filipino internet users despite the good news from the duopoly. Nevertheless, it is quite intriguing that Globe and Smart can provide extra efforts to make mobile internet more accessible and more affordable for future generations of Filipino consumers. Because in the end, what the consumer wants for digital lifestyle would always win.
