On Video Game Movies, Indie Gaming and Virtual Reality

Popular mobile games Minecraft and Fruit Ninja are already making their shift to the big screens and will have their movie adaptations be shown in thousands of movie theaters around the next year. These could have the potential to become new success stories in US box office following The Angry Birds Movie, but not all gamers and movie buffs are not happy with the move. It seems that it is because many think that adapting into a movie could tarnish the reputation of critics and enthusiasts who have been keen in the latest in the gaming world for years.

However, this does not hinder those who want to have a glimpse of these game-based movies as they have been domestically and globally successful during their time at the big screens. If you are ready to watch how your favorite video game transform into a big movie, then go ahead and shout your opinion after watching it. If not, then you can become part of what is known as a dummy society.

I have seen the rise of the independent gaming scene which began releasing for the PC in the early 2000s, and now some of these games have already made the transition to home consoles, handhelds and even mobile devices such as Disney Crossy Road, Rocket League, Pacman 256, and so much more. It seems that indie games are now gaining much success and recognition like the indie movies in the Philippines where some of them are shifted to mainstream. I can say that the efforts of indie game developers to pursuing their games to become mainstream on their own are certainly paying off, and I think that there is a big potential for the Philippines to have its own slueth of indie game developers as well. But it all depends whether the indie game scene in our local shores is just as successful as its own line of indie films.

And then there is the role of virtual reality in video games. The Oculus Rift has already made its way to consumers in several countries last March, and there are many current and upcoming games that are virtual reality-ready by the time of their release. I've already experienced how virtual reality works when I first got my hands on the Samsung Gear VR at a Samsung Experience Store in my favorite shopping mall, and I can say that it has a role in providing better entertainment for those who wear it. Hmm, I think that I can get into a new way of playing video games just by wearing a virtual reality headset and use my keyboard-mouse combo as a controller. But, it all depends on what game is compatible to a certain control scheme. Anyway, many are expecting 2016 to be a year for virtual reality, and so far I think it has really lived up to everyone's expectations.
